An Indian temple which is more inclined than the tower of Pisa
We all know about the Leaning Tower of Pisa which is
tilted by nearly 4° but there is also one temple in India which is situated on
the banks of the Ganga river known as the Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple (aka The
Leaning Tower of Varanasi) which has a tilt of 9°.
Let's get to the stories of both the towers and why
did they start to lean:
The Leaning Tower of Pisa was built by the architect
named Bonano Pisano in the city of Pisa, Italy in the 12th century and took
nearly 200 years for its completion. The construction started in the year 1173
A.D. and the tower began to tilt by the end of the 12th century. The
construction was completed by the end of the 14th century. The height of the
tower is 54 m. The reasons were prominently the soft soil present beneath the
tower which couldn't bear the weight of the structure. By nearly 1860s the tilt
was seen to be 5.5°.The restoration was carried out by the government from 1990
to 2001 which reduced the tilt to 3.99°. A large amount of soil beneath the
tower was excavated to reduce the weight and then to balance the forces various
types of anchors, cables were attached to behold the tower from further
leaning.
The Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple was bulid by the
servant of the Raja Man Singh for his mother Ratna Bai in the 18th century. The
temple is build on the banks of the River Ganga near the Manikarnika Ghat ( aka Kashi Karvat or the Leaning Tower of
Varanasi ).The height of the temple is 14 m .There is a weird fact about its
location because most of the temples constructed on the banks of the river are
given good foundation and plinth level height but this temple is constructed very close the river
due to which it is mostly submerged in the water during the Rainy season while
it can be entered during Summers or Winters. The temple never had a tilt as it
has now because it can be seen standing straight in the paintings of 19th
century by the English scholar James Prinsep. The paintings from the 19th
century also depicted that there were also many other temples constructed along
the bank but nowadays it is the only temple left to be seen. The foundation of
this temple is completely submerged under the water .The temple began to tilt
after its foundation collapsed from either side due to the pressure exerted by
the river currents. As of now the angle of slant of the temple is 9° which is
far much greater than the Leaning Tower of Pisa .Even though the temple is
partially submerged under water most of the times it is well preserved from
inside .
The Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the most
visited places in the Varanasi one may see most of the tourist curious to know
about the temple , the various stories behind it .It is one of the most
photographed temples in the Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Even though this great
architecture is present in our country which is as great as other architectures
around the world it is mostly not known by the people.
