Ancient Wisdom: Aryabhatta's Solar Eclipse Revelation
The eminent Indian mathematician
Aryabhatta is well known. Can you believe that when everyone was debating
whether the earth was flat or round in the fifth century, he explained exactly
how solar eclipses happen.
He constructed a tranquil observatory
in Ujjain. He was enthusiastic about observing the sky and had excellent
mathematical skills. He dedicated his entire life to the study of mathematics
and cosmology.
His studies led him to the conclusion
that the earth revolves around the sun and moon. He explained solar eclipse by
pointing out that the earth experiences an eclipse when the moon moves in front
of the sun. Due to the moon's alignment with the sun and earth, darkness
results from this alignment. He provided a schematic diagram to explain this
occurrence.
He also claimed that he could
determine the location of the solar eclipse based on the size of the bodies of
these objects. He was the person who made a contribution to Indian astronomy.
He recalled naming the first satellite that India (Bharat) launched in his
honour.
